I dedicate this song to all of the land stewards out there. Thank you for taking care of our earth in a sustainable way.
I was the steward of a piece of land on the Big Island of Hawaii where I lived and grew my food. Unfortunately after I purchased it I realized it was adjacent to a GMO papaya field and I witnessed first hand what cross contamination can mean for a farm. Once bees from those fields pollinated my papaya flowers, my papaya trees were contaminated and were no longer organic but rather GMO! It was horrible because papayas were one of my main food sources. At the same time the film called "The Future of Food" came out and talked about the corn in Mexico being at risk of GMO contamination. My heart ached. I had a very visceral reaction and still can feel the sadness in my bones when I think of Mexico losing it's corn. Many of our vegetables are going extinct due to GMOs. Small seed companies are being bought by huge pharmaceutical companies who own huge seed companies. They are banking the organic seeds. We dont know with what kind of or if any care, they are just taking them out of the consumers hands and storing them and then replacing them with GMO seeds. This is so sad to me. Food sovereignty is our birthright. This song is a message to Monsanto. When it comes to mother nature you can't cheat!! We are on to you!
lyrics
I am a woman of the Land
I work with humble hands
i wake with the sun
go to sleep when my workday is done
I am a woman of the land
and I have come to take a stand
against the poisoning of our land
against Monsanto milking our nation
sucking us dry
with my machete ill cut down your GE corn
like a mother bear I'll protect the newborn
lwith my hands i'll pull my own damn weeds
cuz i dont need your fuckin round up ready seed
Whats my family to eat?
when it comes to mother nature dont you know
you you can't cheat?!!
You say you wanna control my food supply
that its part of your business plan
whats left to eat when the seeds all die?
what's left when you've poisoned the land?
I cry as the crow drops your GE seed
I cry as the crow flies from you field
to my field
I cry as the crow drops your GE seed
We're standing up
we're saving seeds
We're on to you
Gonna bring you to your knees
standing up
Everybody stand up!
Why's everbody gonna stand up?
Cuz
Whats our families to eat?
when it comes to mother nature don't you know
you you can't cheat?!!
I am a woman of the Land
planting seeds with humble hands
I plant this seed with humble hands
I wake with the sun
won't go to sleep till my workday is done
